Major Health Issues Every Woman Should be Aware of
There are health issues every woman should be aware of. Because, they have a lot of issues like breast cancer, heart diseases, and other health conditions. Research studies show that it is because of the several physical and hormonal changes that occur in women throughout their life.
Let us address a few women health issues here
Heart Disease
Heat disease is the no 1 cause for women. Symptoms of heart attack are chest pain, shortness of breath. They may also experience nausea vomiting. However, most of the women do not recognize the symptoms and dismiss them as tiredness or heartburn. Although menopause does not cause any heart issues, it may cause risk factors like high blood pressure and cholesterol, and lower estrogen.
Thyroid Dysfunction
The small butterfly-shaped gland regulates the body’s metabolism and growth. It also secretes several hormones like Thyroxine (T4) , Triiodothyronine (T3) and Calcitonin.
Excess production of these hormones causes hyperthyroidism, while under-production causes hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism causes weight loss, fatigue, hair fall, and drying of the skin. And, hypothyroidism results in weight gain, sleep disturbance, and muscle weakness. Studies show that women are 8 times more likely to develop thyroid problems when compared to men.
How to prevent thyroid:
Cancer
According to the studies, there are two types of cancers women most get affected of. They are Breast cancer and Cervical cancer which are responsible for the death of about a million women every year. Both these cancers could be cured or stalled if they are detected during the early stages.
Factors that cause Breast Cancer:
- Not being physically active
- Being overweight or having obesity after menopause
- Taking hormonal pills
- Reproductive history
- Drinking AlcoholÂ
Experts recommend, women may do a monthly breast self-exam as a part of prevention. Women ages 40 to 49 may have a mammogram every 1 to 2 years. While women ages 50 to 75 should have a mammogram every 1 year depending on their risk factors, to check for breast cancer.
Factors that cause cervical cancer:
- More than three pregnancies or pregnancy before the age of 17
- Family history of cervical cancer
- Long-term use of oral contraceptives (more than 5 years)
- Weakened immune system
- Smoking
- Multiple sex partners
Experts recommend, women ages 30 through 65 should get screening with either a Pap test every 3 years or the HPV test every 5 years.
Depression
Research shows that women are more prone to depression than men. A survey reveals around 12 million women are hit by depression every year. Depression can last for several weeks and interfere with activities. Family history, marital problems, chronic illness, stressful life events, physical or sexual abuse, and so on are all risk factors. However, women should learn to prioritize their own needs.
Sexually transmitted diseases
Women should be concerned about their sexual health. Because sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) affect them quickly. It has been discovered that an STD has a more severe effect on women than on men. Although STDs are frequently left untreated in women because their symptoms are less noticeable or because they are more likely to be misdiagnosed with another illness, they can have serious consequences, such as infertility.
